How EMM Is Evolving Into a Smarter Mobile Business Hub

The definition of Enterprise Mobility Direction (EMM) keeps irresolute as fast as our notion of what mobile is and what it can do for businesses. At Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona in February, the question of what EMM means for privacy and security proved to accept circuitous answers for business users and the organizations employing them. Simply it'southward only one slice of EMM'southward larger evolution around truly mobile business.

MWC Bug ArtAcross the basic application, information, and device layers, EMM providers such as MobileIron, SOTI, and VMware'south AirWatch are creating a material upon which enterprises can manage more and more than aspects of their business. Whether it's with broader cross-platform compatibility, smarter email and notifications, better mobile-optimized business apps, or improved discoverability, EMM is transforming into a conduit for mobile productivity.

Blake Brannon, Vice President of Product Marketing at AirWatch at the time of MWC, said the space is ready for that side by side phase beyond mobility, content management, and app management. He said AirWatch is focusing on app transformation—taking tasks even so traditionally done on desktop (or web-based) apps and figuring out smart ways to mobile-optimize them—and then improving mobile productivity past designing better native actions to complete tasks.

"Information technology's not but most taking 100 apps we accept for desktop and porting them to mobile," said Brannon. "Information technology'due south about breaking downward the information someone is seeking to go. Think about a typical email workflow. You accept a question, some data, and you demand 3 more points of data from some back-end system the company is using to make a ameliorate determination. You need the ability to complete a task. It'south driving a next level of efficiency and productivity by taking something that would require me to become into an entirely split app and showtime from step i, and turn that productivity into a swipe gesture."

The AirWatch philosophy feeds into VMware'southward push for the "digital workspace" through its Workspace ONE platform, and each EMM provider is targeting that centralized mobile enterprise experience in different ways. Carl Rodrigues, President and CEO of SOTI, said the trouble of mobility is way bigger than EMM, and explained how SOTI is extending its platform to everything from analytics to the Internet of Things (IoT).

"You lot need to manage your devices, your software, information, documents, browsing experience, and security; that's EMM," said Rodrigues. "But we're also looking very heavily at business intelligence (BI), which is dissimilar for each vertical. Nosotros are providing an open, customizable platform then yous tin suck out data from our organisation and pipe information technology in real time to the appropriate business analytics engine."

Using Notifications for "Data Snacking"

Email is notwithstanding the entry betoken for concern productivity on mobile. Similar to how Google's Inbox acts as a hub of bundled notifications, the email-based notification center is where EMMs are natively integrating the larger app infrastructure. Brannon said AirWatch views this centralized hub as a way to facilitate "information snacking" for improve productivity.

"Information snacking is piddling pieces of info that, when I've got two minutes while I'm pumping gas and I decide to check electronic mail, I encounter this and realize it requires me to exercise something," said Brannon. "How exercise I take advantage of that? If I'thou jumping into some other app, if I need to go back to the desktop, I'g not going to consummate that task. I'thousand going to put information technology on the to-do list and await until I get back to the desktop. I desire to take that 2 minutes of fourth dimension and be able to end a job."

Data snacks tin can be manufacture-specific and tied to location as well. Brannon gave the case of a doctor making rounds in a hospital, checking his or her phone, and seeing a notification saying, "You're near Room 412, hither'south the back-end data with this patient'southward name and chart info" without opening a specific app. This sort of inbox is also where notifications surface from collaboration, chore, and project management apps (such as Slack or Asana) that are making upwardly the different experiences through which users interact with enterprise information.

Expanding the Enterprise App Ecosystem

EMM providers are as well building their own apps to requite businesses more than granular control over dissimilar aspects of the user experience (UX). These app bundles all revolve effectually the secure email apps transforming into notification hubs, simply have branched out to include everything from browser and document management to built-in assist desk apps.

"We see the shelf life of enterprise apps every bit very, very short," said Sean Ginevan, Senior Director of Strategy at MobileIron at the time of MWC. "In the consumer world, you kickoff off liking something and y'all apply it for a year or perchance xviii months until a meliorate version comes out, and yous switch. Having apps be interchangeable in that fashion is really of import. IT is now beingness driven by employee preference, not the other fashion effectually."

One pronounced app tendency is secure browsers. Apps such as AirWatch Browser, MobileIron's Web@Work, and SOTI Surf are designed to keep enterprise users within a browsing experience that feels like Chrome or Safari, with deeper security and privacy settings baked in. SOTI's Rodrigues explained that SOTI Surf was actually built past using Google's Chromium open up-source web browser code. The resulting browsing experience feels similar Chrome, but with access to a corporate intranet without virtual private network (VPN) login plus added features such as a dorsum-end spider web crawler to categorize dissimilar types of sites.

The email and browser experiences are also tied into secure certificate management apps such every bit SOTI Hub, the VMware AirWatch Content Locker, and MobileIron Docs@Work. Rodrigues described SOTI Hub as a corporate content management solution cleaved down with dissimilar departments inside an enterprise. The visitor has scaled it up over fourth dimension to handle millions of files and map complex folder directories and then users tin can pull up file search results from their devices in seconds.

Ultimately, it's nearly keeping mobile users on task without forcing them to exit the EMM experience to find something they need. It's become so streamlined that EMMs now accept their ain congenital-in aid desk apps as well, including MobileIron Help@Work and SOTI'due south Pocket Controller.

"We're edifice something like ServiceNow into the product," said SOTI'due south Rodrigues. "Every one of our large customers at present has a assist desk-bound built into the production to create tickets, admission a knowledge base, and go into our analytics and diagnostics information. All of that is built into the product: video chat, vocalism conversation, everything. You don't need to go out and source something else."

Dissimilar Means to Tackle Discoverability

To brand the UX experience more natural when dealing with enterprise apps, EMM solutions also need to solve for discoverability. It's nigh devising an intuitive way to surface IT-approved apps relevant to a particular department or apply case, and each EMM provider with whom PCMag spoke approaches it a bit differently.

AirWatch uses a sorcerer during setup to recommend specific app choices for users based on their industry and use case. MobileIron, on the other hand, has an app store of all the IT-approved enterprise apps bachelor for users' devices. SOTI has a marketplace as well, only it includes recommendations and social elements such as blogging and communications.

MobileIron has an enterprise app store listing the recommended apps canonical by the Information technology department, and SOTI'southward marketplace includes elements of both sides. Inside MobiControl version 13 (the latest version of its EMM product at the time of MWC in March, now in version fourteen.0.1 as of terminal month), there's a curated list of integrated third-party apps and services, tagged with different industry-specific categories, along with a community chemical element that includes blogging and review functionality in each app's market place entry. Both echo the experience of consumer app stores.

Brannon described the sorcerer in AirWatch as a recommendation engine calibrated for different verticals. Rather than the IT department vetting every app or inundating the user with a choice of all the available apps, he said AirWatch surfaces a few "best-of-breed" options with associated app configurations for a user'south device.

"You can log into the system and say 'I'thou in healthcare and I'g deploying a mobile clinician device,' and it says 'Employ Ballsy or CERN, and here are the iii best recommended apps for that,'" said Brannon. "3 clicks and you tin [avoid] weeks of research and [take] a couple hours to configure everything with compliance and reporting, and make information technology a whole lot faster and simpler."

Breaking Downwardly Platform and Infrastructure Barriers

Broadening EMM to comprehend unabridged enterprise organizations is tricky when you lot want it housed within one uncomplicated feel. It ways simplifying the management of fleets of Android, iOS, and Windows devices while integrating all of the back-cease services and existing infrastructure in which a business is already invested. It's one of the main drivers behind the AppConfig Community that was launched by AirWatch, MobileIron, and other EMMs.

That cross-platform access is also why Rodrigues said SOTI, which isn't participating in the open-source initiative, integrates with devices at the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) level. Across the top of the SOTI dashboard are icons for Windows Phone, desktops and tablets; Android and iOS devices; and what the visitor calls Android Plus—a custom device management suite built directly from Android source code (in partnership with close to 100 Android device manufacturers).

MWC Demo of SOTI's EMM Dashboard

"We work with local device manufacturers to enable deeper direction beyond even what Google or the OEMs provide," said SOTI'southward Rodrigues. "Android Plus is technology nosotros adult over viii years of inquiry to go in at the platform level. We also created a new set up of open up [awarding programming interfaces or API] and RESTful web services to allow developers and Information technology to automate in use cases like inventory management, information migration, and device life cycle management."

All the EMM providers are working to go far simpler on IT to integrate EMM at all different levels of a company's infrastructure. SOTI works largely at the API and OEM level while MobileIron is budgeted the enterprise stack from what Ginevan described as a "systems level," tackling unlike layers of the stack from a vendor-neutral perspective.

"In that location are a lot of viewpoints out there that, if you want to practice mobile, keen! Rip out your entire existing infrastructure and use our cloud infrastructure," said MobileIron's Ginevan. "Nosotros believe mobile actually needs to be extended to the investments you've made. If you've done a massive deployment of SiteMinder from CA [Technologies], don't rip that out. Reuse the things you lot're already invested in and we'll extend mobile services into that infrastructure. That idea of option really matters."

Ginevan said that, from a platform perspective, MobileIron sees Apple, Google, and Microsoft fighting for enterprise mindshare. Microsoft and Google are trying to fight for cloud computing, productivity, and identity. Apple and Microsoft are fighting over the UX. Apple and Google are fighting on the device side to come across, as Ginevan put it, "who tin be sticky and own the calculating fleet."

The CIOs and IT departments deploying EMM solutions need to enquire what the right mix is of the iii principal players that fit their enterprise, whether it's using iOS devices with Office 365 running on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and hooked into Salesforce.com, or whatever combination makes sense for their business organisation.

"We don't care what identity provider you desire to use; we don't intendance if you choose iOS or Android; if you use native apps with Function we tin become in and secure that too," said MobileIron's Ginevan. "Nosotros want to exist the neutral tertiary party that allows enterprises to brand those decisions with eyes wide open, and choose what's right for them and for the investments they've already made."

That simplicity is key to where technology companies say EMM is going. It's nigh making it like shooting fish in a barrel on enterprise Information technology departments to manage mobile infrastructure at every level, while on the front terminate, enabling users to exist more productive on the device that never leaves their pocket. EMMs say they demand to solve for each concern and industry's unique compliance bug and policies while simultaneously making the UX simple.

"The Siris and Cortanas and built-in mail service clients are going to be targeting the personal digital assistant for the side by side three years," said AirWatch's Brannon. "Nobody is going to practice this for the enterprise, integrate with their back-finish SAP or Oracle or Ballsy systems and all these tools enterprises use. Those are farther off than what Apple or Microsoft is going to build into the Bone, and it's what EMMs are squarely focused on right now. Enterprises are a different use instance with different tools just it's notwithstanding the aforementioned user."
